That was the Swing Era, that blessed epoch of the big bands, whose sounds enticed thousands onto vast dance floors the time when Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald were merely singers in the band, and when Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie could do no wrong.
