Kristin Rule was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1976. Shortly after her birth, her family returned to Australia, their country of origin. She grew up in Melbourne and began playing the cello at age twelve and later took up the saxophone at age fourteen. Kristin completed her Bachelor of Music majoring in composition at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2000. During her studies she received the Peers Coetmore Scholarship for Cellists in 1997 and she won the Quip Quip composition commission in 2000.
